Dear President, Club Health Chairman & Zone Chairmen, 10th November2005 DO YOU KNOW, HOW MANY IN YOUR COMMUNITY SUFFER FROM LYMPHOEDEMA? – IF YOU DON’T KNOW, YOU ARE CERTAINLY NOT ALONE! I respectfully urge your Lions Club or Zone Clubs to seriously consider the possibility of sponsoring a “Lymphoedema Screenings weekend”, as a new District Health Project. All dates in 2006 are allocated to our District,, so Please contact me with your preferred dates (3rd weekend of March, June, August or November 2006.) When dates are confirmed I will forward a promotional CD and materials for the co- ordination of the “Free Screenings”, to the sponsoring Club or Zone contact person. Many People in the community know little about the incidence of Lymphoedema, the extent of personal discomfort associated with Lymph Node damage, and the enormous costs, both personally and to the community for subsequent treatment. A commitment from the LIONS of District 201C2 for the “Free Lymphoedema Screening Project” would put Lions at the forefront of making the community more aware of the Risks, Solutions, and Preventative Strategies of this debilitating disease. Please consider a SCREENING date and provide your community with the opportunity to identify the onset of Lymphoedema and preventative strategies. Over 2 days of Screenings in Berri March 2005, The results show a total of 156 persons presented, another 50 or so persons presented, picked up information and left without being screened. Of those who presented, 126 were females and 30 were males. Thus 23 % of the presentations were male. This is higher than previous screening and while somewhat disappointing its at least a sign that more males are showing more concern for their health management. Of these total presentations, 60 women (88 %) and 8 men (12 %) were moderate to high-risk category. Prof Neil Piller (Flinders Medical) said “once Lymphoedema develops they have a lifelong problem requiring on going treatment and management, can cost between $500 and $5000 per year (common range $2500- $3000) for good treatment. Added to the financial cost is the need to have time off work, productivity loss. Given that the average age of the persons presenting was 60 and the average life expectancy of late seventies/early eighties. If the early detection can stop just 10 of 24 people from developing their problem = a saving of $600,000. I’d hope that we could save many more from developing Lymphoedema and if we were very optimistic and believed we could save them all from developing it the cost saving would be in the region of $1,440,000.” Apart from the psychological, emotional and social cost to the individual, these 2 days of testing saved the individuals & Government health systems between $600,000 - $1,440,000. LIONS - WE SERVE AND WE MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO MANY ! I respectfully urge your Lions Club or Zone Clubs to seriously consider the possibility of sponsoring a “Lymphoedema Screenings weekend”, as a new District Health Project. Please contact me with your preferred dates (3rd weekend of March, June, August or November) all dates in 2006 are allocated to our District, which is excellent. When a date is confirmed I will forward a promotional CD /materials for the co- ordination of the “Free Screenings”, to the sponsoring Club or Zone contact person. Please consider a SCREENING date and provide your community with the opportunity to identify the onset of Lymphoedema and preventative strategies. Please call if you require additional information.
